What is mitral valve?

It lies between the left atrium and left ventricle. How does it work? It allows blood to flow from the left atrium into the left ventricle and during ventricular contraction it prevents the back flow of blood into the left atrium. (Web definition,2008)

How if mitral valve doesn’t work properly? If blood leak the wrong way through the flaps of the valve, it may cause shortness of breath, chest pain, palpitations, and other symptoms. However, most people who have MVP have no medical problems; they can have normal lives and don’t need treatment. On the other hand, a small number of people who suffer from MVP may need medical treatment such as mitral valve surgery or mitral valve replacement.
